After Lance, Julian, and Chloe left, my boss pulled me into his office. “Has anyone told you that you’re an incredible actress?”

I was? I shook my head.

“You are. If I hadn’t known you were behind today’s prank, I would’ve fully believed in your innocence. I think Chloe and Julian forgot they weren’t actually the masterminds of it, too.”

“Chloe and Julian get carried away rather easily, don’t they?”

“It’s part of the fun. Did you see pictures of Lance’s office?”

“He sent them to me this morning while requesting my help getting revenge.”

“Try to keep the mischief to manageable levels, please.”

“His kitchen is due for renovation next, and he prefers gas stoves and already has the hookups. Apparently, his townhouse is a real fixer upper in dire need of love. My next prank will be to give him a stove and kitchen appliances filled with paper airplanes. I think I’ll add those little parachuting army men, too.”

“I have nothing left to teach you. Continue on, use my credit card, and have fun.”

I laughed. “Give it to me straight, sir. Why are we spending so much money on him? There has to be a real reason for this.”

“You’re ruthless and smart, I see.”

“Sir, you gave me fifty thousand dollars specifically to pull pranks on this man. This is not cover Chloe in glitter type of pranking. What’s actually going on? Why?”

“How much do you know about Lance?”

“His parents are divorced, I’m concerned he might be too nice for his own good, and I can’t figure out why he’s single. He seems to love fixing things that are broken. He likes comics. He got a run down townhouse on the cheap and is renovating it. I think he might be doing the work on his own, which is concerning.”

“Before he became an attorney, he worked in construction. Actually, he worked construction to help pay for law school. Despite appearances, he’s actually qualified to do those renovations.”

“Why is he single? That sort of man is hunted in packs. Like Julian. In packs, sir. I mean, I wouldn’t hunt either of them as part of a pack, but you get what I mean.”

“I really don’t, but I’m going to smile, nod, and pretend I do. I’m an old man, Alice. Don’t make me think about Lance as someone to be hunted in a pack.”

I blushed. “Sorry, sir.”

“Don’t be sorry. It’s all right. He’s single because he has a comic fetish and annoys women with his pranks. He tests women with his pranks, and if they don’t have a sense of humor, he loses interest right away. Once they find out he’s a comic book junky, they run away.”

“Ah. Chloe said Julian’s board games caused him issues.”

“Same deal. Every time he’s been interested, the woman has run like a bat out of hell when they realize he loves comic books when he’s not busy being a lawyer. You know how it gets with us lawyer types.”
